The City of Covington prioritized enhancing connectivity and walkability through the Pace Street Road Diet and Pedestrian Facilities project, a key initiative from the Hwy 278 Corridor LCI Process. The project connected Covington’s downtown square to the Hwy 278 commercial district by constructing 0.4 miles of new pedestrian and bicycle facilities, including sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and 5-foot-wide bicycle lanes. Other improvements included raised curbs, landscaped medians, pedestrian crossings, lighting, and street furnishings, transforming the corridor from an unsafe, car-centric area to a balanced travel environment. The redesign reduced vehicle lanes from four to three and included provisions for future redevelopment, such as convertible parking spaces. This project not only resolved previous accessibility issues but also created a gateway that reflects the city’s charm and garnered public support for future infrastructure initiatives.
