This project served as a key initiative to make Covington a more walkable city, connecting the downtown square to the commercial district along Hwy 278 by introducing pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Identified as a priority during the Hwy 278 Corridor LCI Process, it also aimed to integrate open spaces and greenways within the Dried Indian Creek floodplain and along the railroad. Previous conditions along Pace Street lacked adequate pedestrian or bicycle facilities, with broken sidewalks, ADA non-compliance, and dangerous driveways, making travel difficult, especially for disabled citizens. The project redesigned Pace Street, reducing the number of lanes from four to three, adding 5′ wide dedicated bike lanes, new sidewalks, raised curbs, landscaping, and ADA-compliant ramps. These improvements enhanced connectivity, creating a safer, more accessible route between Covington’s downtown and commercial areas, while garnering public support for future city improvement projects.
