As a part of our Regional Safety Contract for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), our team was tasked with evaluating Langhorn Street in Atlanta, GA to determine if safety improvements were needed. The study area spanned Langhorn Street from State Route 139/Ralph David Abernathy to Westview Drive.

Our Keck + Wood team gathered historical crash data for the previous five years; identified areas with high crash rates, high crash severity, and locations that involved crashes with pedestrians or bicycles; evaluated potential improvements that would reduce the number and severity of crashes; and compiled a list of alternatives that ranged from additional roadway and pedestrian lighting to the installation of a roundabout at the I-20 ramp terminal. We created cost estimates for each improvement for development of a benefit-cost ratio to be used to identify the best improvements, as well as to justify the benefit of the project for funding purposes. Finally, our Keck + Wood team developed concept layouts and cross-sections to better illustrate the extent of the planned improvements.
